Why You Need Regular Dental Visits

The American Dental Association recommends that you visit your dentist for a routine check-up twice a year, or every six months. If we only need to go a minimum of twice a year, why do so many of us dread the trip? We at Austell Dental Associates understand the anxiety many face. We know that many feel intimidated by sitting in a dentist’s chair, even for short and quick visits. Keeping up regular visits, however, is a crucial part of maintaining good health for your teeth and gums.

What Happens During an Exam?

Your exam may begin with an X-ray of all four quadrants; taking X-rays allows your dentist to view any underlying issues that may not be readily apparent at the surface. Next, your dentist may check any signs of very serious conditions, such as malnutrition, diabetes, and even mouth cancer. Your dentist also takes that time to examine your bite and jaw, to note any current issues or determine a course of action for an issue that may arise in the future. Finally, your dentist will assess the overall health of both of your teeth and gums.

Your dentist may perform any of the following during the procedure:

  • Look for signs of gum disease
  • Check for possible tooth decay
  • Check for broken teeth
  • Observe your bite
  • Check for loose teeth
  • See if any fillings have damage
  • Check the tissues of your mouth

After your exam, the next most important step is the teeth cleaning. Either your dentist or a certified dental hygienist will handle this step. The cleaning process is the next step needed to loosen tartar and plaque accumulation, which typically occurs just along the gum line. When plaque has hardened, it becomes tartar, which is difficult to remove by brushing and flossing along. A dentist helps dislodge the hardened buildup.
