How Soon After Tooth Extraction Can You Have an Implant?

Dental Implants After a Tooth Extraction

Dental implants have become the favored choice for tooth replacement for being the most efficient and permanent prosthetic option. Because the titanium rod that serves as the foundation that holds the entire tooth replacement together, it requires the post to infuse with the jawbone, and not everyone may have the same amount or health status when it comes to bone structure.

How Long Should I Wait for Implants?

Every case is unique, and some may obtain their permanent restoration in as little as 3 months following their tooth extraction procedure, or even up to a year for more severe cases encountering bone loss or other complications.

Immediate Placement

If your jaw contains sufficient bone structure, and your jaw and gum tissues are healthy enough, the titanium implant may be able to be inserted immediately following your tooth extraction. Through a process called osseointegration, the biocompatible rod will infuse with the bone in a matter of 3-6 months. After it has completely healed, your implant site is ready to receive its permanent prosthetic crown whose foundation simultaneously aids in preventing bone loss.

Early Implant Placement

Also known as an immediate-delayed implant, this requires the dental implant to be inserted 2-3 months after the tooth has been removed. This option is recommended for patients containing some missing bone structure, damaged gums, and supporting tissues, or possible infections that require some time to heal. Placing the implant within this three-month timeframe is crucial, for over half of bone resorption occurs within 3 months following an extraction. Once inserted, the implant will need an additional 3-6 months to bond and heal before the prosthetic crown can be permanently cemented into place.

Delayed Implant Placement

If there is an insufficient amount of bone structure at the extraction site, a bone grafting procedure will be required to follow through with the implant process. Recovering from this procedure and having the bone grafting site healed enough to place the implant may require anywhere from 3-6 months. After the implant has been inserted, then the conventional wait period of another 3-6 months will be necessary before the permanent crown can finally be placed atop the implant site.
