7 Ways to Help Prevent Gum Recession

In many cases, receding gums is an indication of an infection breaking down tissues which support the teeth. A dentist can review the diagnosis and the causative elements of the problem to determine the most effective treatment plan.

The following are the ways gum recession could occur:

  1. Poor oral health
  2. Overzealous brushing using hard toothbrush bristles
  3. Malpositioned teeth, resulting in crowding or spreading of teeth
  4. Clenching and grinding of teeth (bruxism), which many dentists believe causes gum recession
  5. Bad habits like putting foreign objects in the mouth or scratching gums using foreign objects
  6. A genetic condition for having thin gum tissue

In order to avoid losing teeth or suffering other significant symptoms, you must pay close attention to your daily oral care. Get regular cleanings, use sensitive toothpaste, and perhaps use a mouth guard if you are suffering from early symptoms of gum recession.

The seven ways you could prevent further gum recession include:

  • Ask your dentist to teach you proper brushing and flossing
  • Use only ultra-soft toothbrushes
  • Wear a night guard every evening to reduce stress on your teeth during sleep
  • Avoid putting any foreign objects in your mouth
  • Consider orthodontic therapy to realign your teeth into their proper position, increasing the zone of gum tissue
  • Make sure your bite is comfortable and has been adjusted if required
  • Consider gum grafting to increase the area of attached gum tissue, perhaps cover the roots of your teeth as well
