Choosing the Right Mouthwash

December 14, 2016 By Austell Dental Associates

Choosing the Right Mouthwash

Another important element to maintaining optimal oral health is using mouthwash on a daily basis. However, not all of them are created equal. There are many types of mouthwashes out there, each with their own specific specialty. So, which one is best for you?

The following are the common types of mouthwashes:

  • Antibacterial – If you need to prevent gum disease and bad breath, an antibacterial mouthwash will help eliminate bacteria that causes bad breath, plaque, and gingivitis. Most over-the-counter mouthwashes are considered antibacterial.
  • Fluoride – If you are the type of person who is prone to cavities and don’t drink fluoridated water frequently, then fluoride mouthwash is for you. Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps protect the teeth by strengthening the tooth enamel to make it more resistant to tooth decay. Unfortunately, fluoride mouthwash won’t protect your teeth against gum disease.
  • Prescription – If you have been diagnosed with gingivitis or gum disease, your dentist may prescribe you with a mouthwash that isn’t available over-the-counter. Prescription mouthwash contain powerful antibacterial properties compared to mouthwashes sold in stores. They have a tendency to stain teeth, which is why dentist need to monitor the usage.

If you are curious to know what mouthwash is right for you, visit your dentist and ask which one is best for maximum oral health. Our dentists at Austell Dental Associates are dedicated to being up-to-date on the most recent dental techniques and appliances, including mouthwashes.
