Do I Need Oral Surgery?
Oral surgery might be necessary to correct and repair certain issues related to oral health. Although dentists sometimes perform surgeries, they may recommend you to see an oral surgeon for more complex procedures.
An oral surgeon obtained more training than a dentist, spending at least four years in a surgical program connected to a hospital. In addition to their oral surgery diplomas, some oral surgeons also get medical degrees. They receive training in general surgery, plastic surgery, emergency medicine, anesthesiology, and otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat).
When Might You Need Oral Surgery?
The following are several situations in which oral surgery may be required:
- Impacted teeth – While it often occurs with wisdom teeth, it can happen in other areas of your mouth as well.
- Overbites and underbites – If your jaw or teeth are not properly aligned, your dentist may recommend you to an oral surgeon, especially if your overbite or underbite is excessive or you experience trouble chewing or swallowing.
- Breathing and sleeping issues – If you a suffering from sleep apnea or a snoring condition, you may opt for surgery if a CPAP machine or other device is not sufficient.
- Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems – If you have recurring jaw-joint issues, then you may need oral surgery.
- Implants – A dental implant is used to replace missing teeth. The oral surgeon inserts a titanium implant into your jaw, then a crown is attached by your dentist.
- Facial injury repair or infections – If you suffered an injury or illness which caused facial damage, an oral surgeon can repair the problem.
- Cancer treatment – Cancers in the mouth, head, and/or neck area can be treated by oral surgeons.
If you are experiencing pain with your teeth, jaws, or gums, visit your dentist as soon as possible. If it is an emergency, go directly to the ER. However, your dentist can take care of most oral issues and recommend an oral surgeon if necessary.
