How to Prevent Teeth Discoloration and Staining

Austell Dental Associates has helped brighten the smiles for countless numbers of patients over the years. One of the things that our patients often express to us is wanting to prevent the tooth discoloration. For some, this is an issue that is beyond one’s control; you may be taking certain medications or have another ailment that may be conducive to staining and discoloration. For others, just changing one’s habits can work to reduce discoloration and even undo some of it.

What Causes Discoloration?

Every person’s circumstances—whether it is through personal habits or environmental factors—can impact the overall health of their teeth. Primarily, there are three causes of tooth discoloration.

1. Outside factors

These are the factors that you can control, due to poor dental care and maintenance. Be sure to establish a regular oral care regimen and stick to it: brushing twice each day, flossing daily, and twice-yearly dental appointments.

2. Intrinsic factors

These are the factors that may be due to genetics and factors that are beyond one’s control. For example, you sustained an injury, damaged your teeth and led to discoloration. It may also come from being exposed to fluoride and certain types of antibiotics at a young age.

3. Age

Aging is an inevitable part of life. As we get older, our tooth enamel begins losing its brilliance and strength. Over time, the dentin will also start showing as the enamel wears.

Austell Dental Associates currently offers a $200 teeth whitening special. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, do not hesitate to contact us!
